The Metropolitan Museum of Art, often referred to simply as The Met, is one of the world’s largest and most important art museums, and by far the largest museum in the United States. It’s on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, along Fifth Avenue on the east side of Central Park.
Even among snobby Europeans, the museum has a very high status. Many times, really without planning it, I visit the museum. I think it is not possible no matter how many times you take the trip not to spot something new and exciting.
The museum opened in February 1872, and has since been one of New York’s most visited attractions. With 7.06 million visitors in 2016, the museum was the third most visited in the world, and the fifth most visited museum of any type.
The museum has reopened after spending a lot of resources on making it safe. – They Welcome you back after more than five long months of closure.
Its permanent exhibitions contain over two million works, divided between 17 curatorial departments. The main building on the east side of Central Park along the Museum Mile in Manhattan. A secondary and far smaller location, The Cloisters at Fort Tryon Park in Upper Manhattan, contains an extensive collection of art, architecture and artifacts from medieval Europe. On March 18, 2016, the museum opened a new museum called Met Breuer for Modern and Contemporary Art on Madison Avenue in the Upper East Side.
The museum is mentioned in the book Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. Percy and his class visit the museum at the beginning of the book.
There are activities on “The Met” all the time, from large exhibitions to more trivial things. For example, you can learn how to draw a cat.
