The Guggenheim Museum in the Spanish city of Bilbao

The industrial city of Bilbao has always impressed and inspired me. – It seems as if nothing is impossible for them, at the same time as they do not go for the simple solutions.

Both beautiful and exciting

From being a dirty and boring city, it is now one of Europe’s most exciting destinations, with a vibrant nightlife, art, culture and architecture everywhere you turn. – And not to forget parks and an old town at the mouth of the river Nervión.

The Guggenheim Museum in the Spanish city of Bilbao was opened in October 1997, and was the result of many years of planning and cooperation between the Basque authorities and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation.

The Basque government had long had a plan to revitalize Bilbao as a European city of culture, and contacted the Guggenheim Foundation, which immediately ignited the idea of building its own museum in Bilbao.

Large parts of the museum are used for temporary exhibitions, which in the last year, among other things. has included an extensive Aztec exhibition and an exhibition of abstract expressionism in the field of painting. The characteristic building was designed by the North American architect Frank O. Gehry, and is largely covered by titanium. But glass, various types of stone and water are also important elements in the facility.
